Freshers Welcome

Freshers and Returners,

Welcome to Royal Holloway for the 2012/13 season, I hope you have had a great summer and are looking forward to the upcoming season. The Men's Rugby Club is one of the best clubs on campus.

We have three teams who all compete for the university. The 1st XV play in 2A and are privileged to be one of the college's 'performance sport' teams; the 2nd XV play in 5A and provides players with the opportunity to demonstrate why they deserve a place with the Firsts. The Development Team is a social side that play in the LUSL. We are also the most socially active club with over 22 socials taking place over the course of the three terms, and we host an Annual Boat Party which is THE event of the year.

The club takes your personal development very seriously, so we put on Careers talks which are given by alumni of the club. Last year we were CLUB OF THE YEAR, and also VOLUNTEERING CLUB OF THE YEAR. So if you'd like to be in a friendly and successful club come find us at the Sports Fayre or around campus!

I look forward to seeing you in September.

Mayowa Olonilua

President 2012/13
(Adventure Team Captain)

Algarve Tour 2012

This year Royal Holloway Rugby Club will continue their annual tour tradition by visiting Albufeira in the Poruguese Alagarve, for a week of "sun, sea, booze, minge, fanny and sex" (see Cartwright, J.: "The Inbetweeners Movie", 2011). Widely acknowledged as the best beach resort in Europe, Albufeira is packed with bars, restaurants, clubs and shops and everything ever needed to have a good time.

We will be departing early on Tuesday 19th June from London Southend Airport and returning the following week (Tuesday 26th June). Staying at Villa Petra, just minutes from Albuefeira's 'Strip', we will no doubt tear up the dancefloors of some of the finest Portuguese discotheques, with the odd trademark 'team beatle' thrown in for good luck!

And to debunk the myth that 'tour' is just an excuse for a lads' holiday, we will be playing a competitive fixture against a team from the University of the Algarve, and hopefully demonstrate on the international stage the exciting brand of rugby that we like to play...

Rugby Club Boat Party 2012

With exams finished, this promises to be an incredible night, and will undoubtedly be a better night than the summer ball for a third of the cost...

Director of Rugby 2012/13

Kyle "Kylie Minogue" Heath has been an important member of the Rugby Club throughout his time at Holloway, consistently representing the 1st XV in the backs, and is a popular figure off the pitch. Despite coming from 'Up North', he has somewhat of a 'hispter' style about his person, but is far more intelligent than most people give him credit for. Now entering his fourth year as a Physics scholar, he will undoubtedly thrive in the role of 'Director of Rugby', and have the opportunity to pass on a wealth of experience to improve training and exert his influence on the style of rugby that Holloway play. He has a lot to live up to, but the club can be confident that he'll carry on the good work of his predecessors and ensure the club remains an active and valued part of the local community.

Social Secretary 2012/13

Josh "Bugalow" Baker, so-called because there's 'nothing going on upstairs', was always destined to become the club's Senior Social Secretary. His enthusiasm for socialising is hard to miss, and made a great first impression when he displayed the unique ability to 'down a pint' faster than any man to have graced the Stumble Inn before him. Sometimes confused for the Son of God, he already has a growing number of disciples, and next year he will undoubtedly have more than Twelve Apostles attending his weekly social events...

Match and Fixtures Secretary 2012/13

Edward Jeffrey has at times been somehwhat of an unknown quantity, earning himself the title of "The Silent Assassin" during the club's tour of Rimini, Italy. Rumour has it that he's still banned from the country for not paying his medical bills for treatment sustained following a foam party related incident, but this has not deterred the rest of the club with entrusting him with a committee position. As a hard working Management student, all can be confident that he will manage to get referees week-in week-out and do an equally good job as his predecessors...

Treasurer 2012/13

Matthew "Byker Grove" Willis is perhaps a unique choice for club treasurer, given his Northern routes, but his outstanding CV saw him narrowly edge the vote at the club's recent elections. Having worked for an accountancy firm during his gap year, everyone can be confident that he'll do a good honest job of looking after the books! As seen above, he spent most of the 2011/12 season on the treatment table following an injury sustained on the pitch, but next year will undoubtedly play a key role in turning the fortunes of the Second XV around.
